When can I start seeds before planting season in western PA?

Hi Patricia, You can start them as soon as February. If you use toilet paper tubes to start your seeds, you can plant the entire thing. The tubes will decompose right in your garden. As far as planting in the ground, I always wait til after Mother's Day. If you soak your seeds, they will bloom faster. Best wishes. -

Look at your seed packet. It will have "days to germinate" on the packet. Then find out your last frost date. Count back how many days to germinate from the last frost date. That will tell you when to plant your seeds. After they grow the first true leaves, you can begin to harden them off by putting them outside for a few hours daily without fear of frost.
