I grow catmint but never had any issues with it dying. I'm sorry to hear that! I would try cutting it back down to the ground and working some compost into the soil around the base. See if you can get it resurge. Catmint is pretty resilient.
Generally plants die of two reasons. Overwatering or under watering. Some die due to too much sun or not enough sun but the mint family plants are tough, love sun and can tolerate dryness. If you don't water it do so. If you do so a lot, cut back and see if the plant starts to send out new leaves.
