Sure! Just add in some peat and/or vermiculite to aerate the soil & aid in drainage. I always look up what kind of soil particular plants like & add in those things that are called for, as the plant won't have as much area from which to draw nutrients, etc.

  • Not recommended. This is the time to spend a few dollars for the proper soil so your plants will thrive and be happy. Any home improvement store and even some grocery stores carry houseplant potting medium.

No ....Top soil is not the proper way to plant.Top soil does not have enough nutrients to keep plants healthy.Use a regular potting mixture.

    Sylvia,

You should use Potting Soil for houseplants. The reason for this is that it

is Sterilized so no "buggies" of any kind will attack your plants, or little creatures that are normally in Yard Dirt, and Topsoil for outdoor plants. I started to use Miracle Grow potting soil only, and the little flies, gnats, and fungus were gone! I'm a convert now, found it out after about 30 years of practice on my own. Good Luck. Try any "Potting Soil", but DON'T use "Topsoil" Or "Yard Dirt" for anything in a pot!

I wish you a very happy time growing your plants, It's turned out to be one of the most relaxing, enjoyable pastimes I have found.

Best of luck and sunshine galore,

    Ellen T.

Ellen, I'm impressed! Outdoor soil is not recommended because of the things outdoor soil contains. But, I used MG potting soil and it was filled with gnats and flies every time. I am currently using mushroom compost from Lowe's and don't see that problem, but they are for my potted porch plants. Let me know if you use MG Potting Soil and how it works for you, Sylvia!
