we add compost. If you don’t make your own buy some manure at your local garden center
If it’s available in your area, get some mushroom soil. It’s wondrous.
Ideally before adding anything you should have your soil tested. In most areas a County Extension service will perform the tests for a small fee and let you know exactly what you need to add, if anything for your garden.
(I know folks always say to add compost but a Master Garden I know who makes loads of his own compost was told by the soil analysis people that he had added too much.)
