It will depend on where you live. Can you give us the state you live in.
The first thing you want to do is mow and rake it good. In early fall when the growing season is about to end but well before cold weather, reseed.
It is best to use one of those little spreaders to make sure you get even coating of seed...making sure you spread in both directions...up and down and across. Then put out a light covering of wheat straw. Dampen lightly every day.
Once the seeds have germinated and have a little growth, gently rake up the straw.
Do not mow again until the seed have germinated and gotten some growth.
Of course if you get the strong rains we have gotten, your seeds will clump and you might want to reseed again quickly.
And don't be surprised if you attract a lot of birds!!
