How do I combat clay soil?

Unless quite hardy, my plants have a hard time surviving!

Compost, compost and more compost. Buy by truckload and till it in as deep as your tiller will go. Leaf mulch is really good and folks around our parts just bag it and put it by the street for pick up, you might want to ask the homeowner if you can have it.

not easy-when leaves fall from trees cut them with lawnmower til into garden-or mulch from garden center-still must til into soil

I replaced the clay soil in my garden beds with bags of compost and topsoil, but mostly compost.
