How to make the sunflower pots with wooden spoons?

Love you guys but too many wonderful projects!! This one was a terra coda flower pot. You start out with yellow painted wooden spoons and do three rows of those with the spoons facing the pot, Then the last row the spoons face outward and they're green You had to do the pot paint too and cut the wooden spoons different sizes--not real clear on the this and the rest. Like how to finish the pot for outdoor use ? How to plant the succulents. I'm a southwest girl so you think this would be easy for me but the one time I tried they died. And these were hanging sideways-- what keeps them from falling out of the pot? Thanks again for getting this old gal back into DIY and craft projects!
