Hi Colin, Sometimes it seems impossible to get grass growing in unfavorable areas—is quite a frustrating experience.
I would consider installing a mulched area in that spot and consider landscaping and decorating that. We had to do this mulching under cedar trees where grass growing was quite impossible.

If you don't want to try any more a river rock bed path might be really nice there.
It looks like a cool spot to put edging around and fill in with landscaping, mulch or rocks!
Make a pond or Rockery etc. Make a paved area and set aa Bird bath or ornament = Old Plough?
Dry creek bed.
Decorate with more large rocks.
Do something other then grass.
Some people for less maintance put down colored rock (we had a 10 strip of white rock with a 10 strip of red rock in our front yard whenre I grew up.
