Why are our trees gradually dying off 1 or 2 limbs at a time?

We have mainly birch trees that are dying, first the limbs go, usually top to bottom, and then the trunk. see photos

They are not very old either.
My heart breaks for you. I’ve lost mine too. Call an arborist or your County Extension Service for advice.

I would check with an arborist, but some of them don't look like they were getting very much sun.
Believe it or not, wind can damage a tree. If you've had storms with lots of wind (high wind but not quite a hurricane or tornado) that can damage a tree or just parts of a tree.
I have huge beautiful old trees in my yard and have the same problem. The one thiing I see is squirrels eating the leaf buds every day. Sometimes they eat every single leaf bud from a branch. Perhaps this stresses those branches so much that they die.
Im thinking not enough water? I have a River Birch which is doing the same thing.
Sadly, We just had 23 ash trees removed due to emerald ash bore beetle. (Squiggly lines under the bark. ) They could not be saved...
