How to redo interior doors from the 80's?

We have old doors from the 80's installed all throughout our house. There are some of the doors that our cats have clawed on and it has peeled the wood laminate off of the door.

I want to stain them, but I'm wondering if there are any great ideas out there to fix the missing laminate problem? I had planned on filling the torn off pieces with wood putty, priming and painting the bottom portion of all the doors, and then staining the rest of the door. I don't mind the funky look.

We've tried purchasing new doors, but doors are bigger now! Just by a bit, but to big to plane the edges in order to make them fit.

Any ideas out there?
Thanks!

You could also put thin molding of the doors to look like a panelled door. That what we did to match all our door in house.

How about a ship lap look by putting a six inch or so piece of wood horizontally on the top and bottom of the door. Then staining or painting it to match the door. Similar to an old wooden bread board with the top and bottom ends a separate piece.
