I have painted cabinets in my kitchen (refurbished house when we purchased it). If you get them from a home improvement store, you should be good. If you're doing this yourself, then you need to do a good job sanding/priming the surface to ensure the paint's durability.

I've never seen them crack. Going with plywood is good, stay away from chip board. Painted cabinets are usually more timeless than a dark stain. I hope you enjoy your new cabinets.

Should not crack or peel. The paint the factory uses is an epoxy based paint sprayed on. It bonds to the surface. Many of the bad reviews were damage to some on delivery. Quality of the cabinets customers chose. They got what they purchased. Some poor customer service.

Definitely get the plywood. More stable and solid. Particle board, MDF, and press board break down quicker. Can swell when wet. Surface can delaminate and flake off.

We had some for many years and they held up very well. I don't know the brand but they were white and the only way I would ever do white in a kitchen setting would be factory painted. They wiped down very easily as well.
