Hey there, I used plastic panels that looked like old tin that I purchased on Amazon, they just glued up over sheetrock so I don't see why they wouldn't glue up over tile. You could also paint it!

Old tile will need to be removed or painted with tile paint kit.
They look like fake tiles, not sure but they are smaller than average tiles.
Anything you use to cover it will add weight and could tear off the wall. Especially when it seems it wasn't put on properly.
