How can I remake a tiny kitchen effectively for more space?

I live in a NYC co-op and face what many of us do...small kitchens not meant for real cooks...no counter space, no storage, etc. I am looking to maximize usable space. Can you help? Thanks

  • A kitchen island with a butcher block top is great to have in a small kitchen. I actually have an old dresser with a large cutting board on top, butcher block can get pretty pricy. I also have a tall plastic shelving unit pushed up against the wall for my appliances and larger pots and whatnot

In case you're still reading Irene...it may be too small for an island but even a 1 x 2 ft cart can give you extra prep room. Otherwise I'd try to go up with a pot rack, pegboard for hanging tools, baker's rack for everything...
