I recently put up subway tile peel and stick wallpaper for a backsplash and it completely transformed the look of my kitchen. It's an easy and inexpensive update. You can check out pics of mine here http://beautyforasheshome.com/faux-subway-tile-backsplash/
I would start by cleaning the cabinets with a light sanding then put a coat of paint of your preference matching your colors & brightening your kitchen! Then tackle those counter tops, either changingthem out if affordable or using some of the products to redo them! I suggest one project at a time! I would look at darker shade of gray for your cabinets! GodLuck!
Paint them, add some little frames to the center first to give em some character. There are premade ones but if you get creative you can diy some and save big bucks
By the way, I have the exact same cabinets in my kitchen, I feel ya. I rent though😝
White or gray is all the rage right now. That would update them to paint or chalk paint them white or gray. For a kitchen I would go with just regular good paint rather than chalk paint, but that is your choice.
go to Home Improvement store and find Rustoleum Cabinet Tranformations. Easy to use, no sanding, base coat and primer combined, one coat. I would do a cream base, (colors mixed in paint dept) than glaze with a green glaze to accent the green countertops. The light color will make the countertops pop and feel new and relevant. You Nader a $100 bucks!
I would paint them white .. there are paint sets that you can get at your hardware store for your kitchen cabinets
