I plan to put burlap over the worn doors, then highlight them with small pieces of fabric (18x22") that I found at Walmart for $1.00. They also have yard sizes. I thought the smaller size might just work so I didn't have to do any cutting. I'm going to glue the overlap to the backs of the doors, folded neatly on the corners and along the edges, of course. Should look very refreshing.

You can go darker but not lighter.

Citristrip would be the way to go. You can stain them after you strip them, or like I did, I liked the color they were once stripped and just cleaned them up and top coated them, they were so much lighter, the old finish was almost black, now you could actually see the beautiful wood grain, not just a hint of it.
After you sand and restain, you can always get new hardware, maybe put glass inserts into some of the cabinet door panels.
Your welcome. Good luck!
