Scrub with TSP (safety glasses). Sand. Paint . Get small electric sander or rent one. Replace handles. New handles would do a lot. Check to see if your community has a habitat for humanity restore thrift shop. They get all kinds of donations, many new things like from builders. Sometimes great cabinets which did not suit a new owner. They have paint. Sometimes handles / hinges and the like.

  • Citristrip the paint off the cabinets. You can rent tools from various sources. Sand lightly and then repaint. It is a big job even in a small kitchen, see if you can get a friend to help.

I would give the cabinet hardware a good cleaning and polishing, and repaint the cabinets in a fresh, clean color. I can't see your countertop, backsplash or floors in the picture, so I'm not sure what color to recommend, but with no changes to the cabinet style, paint is your best bet.

You can buy a stripper that paints on or spray. It will bubble up then scrape off the old paint. Cover your appliances and take the hardware off and lay flat. Spray the hardware, it will look like new. The local Homedepot or Lowe's will help you out. Good Luck! P.S check somehow that the paint you take off isn't lead paint

from 1946 when cabinets were new to 1967 the last time they were painted, I'm sure there is lead In some of the paint so, what do I do?

Habitat for Humanity gets all kinds of things in. Paint, stain and cabinets. If nothing else you can do the open shelf thing. If the doors don't clean up, don't put them back on and just paint or wallpaper the back. Old things are not bad.

Decopoge with any favorite magazine pictures, seed books,or any other paper you like with Hodge podge. I did that to a rusty old metal cabinet and it looks great. I did that about 15 years ago and it still looks great. If it gets scratched you just apply another picture over it . Cheap project that brings out the artist in you . Have fun!

Since you think the current paint might be lead paint - do some research on how to remove lead paint. Better safe than sorry.

paint the bottoms a dark or bright color if you are that bold. Change out all the pulls. Hobby Lobby has hundreds. Take off the trim over the sink and if you need light, hang an exciting looking one.
