Add some inexpensive wood trim and change the door pulls and knobs.
Consider removing the doors and drawer pulls from the cabinets. Putty up all the openings in the doors and drawers. Apply a two inch piece of molding around the edges of the doors and the drawer fronts; sand them first. This will provide the look of shaker cabinets. Sand down any areas that need it. Use caulking to cover cracks where the molding was used. Let that dry, and sand for smoothness. Clean with dry cloth and paint. Find the drawer pulls and door pulls you like. Replace the cabinets doors and drawers after you have sanded and painted the cabinets your color of choice. Probably the same color you painted the doors. Attach the pulls after you have rehung the doors and drawer fronts. You have now a shaker cabinet look. Good look. Hope this helps. Works well when your have flat panel doors like you now have. You might want to replace the hinges with black, silver or gold colored hinges.
Changing the hardware will make a huge difference. You could paint them too. I love the idea of adding molding to give it more depth and bring it to modern day. I have a tutorial on how we just built drawers and make shaker style molding for it. - https://www.justmeasuringup.com/diy-drawer-fronts/

I agree with adding the wood trim for shaker look, however it looks like the current hardware is inset. If that is the case remove hardware and fill with holes with wood putty. Them prep the cabinet door to apply bead board textured wall paper, the add wood trim of your choice.
