Back again, I'm trying to refinish a tabletop that is originally oak stained with varnish? I used citrastrip twice this morning with the plastic applied directly to the surface, electric sander with #60 for rough wood, and minwax furniture refinisher with steel wool and mineral spirits. At the end of a long hot day, there are still blotches of varnish? I cannot remove to restain a tabletop a darker color stain. Help! Varnish will not go!! There are still spots of it, I used citristripx2 with plastic applied directly to top, mineral spirits, min wax furniture refinished, and electric sander with #60 paper for rough wood. I have run out if ideas.Help!

If your finish were truly varnish, it would come off with the stripper. You might have polyurethane or some other non-varnish coating on there. More sanding should take it off.

Keep sanding... you'll eventually get through whatever was used to seal the table.

I can't really see the image, it's so wee for my eyes. Have you talked to someone in a hardware store about stripping products?

going to give it a couple of days,if another good sanding doesn't work with my orbital sander will try a stronger chemical stripper. Thanks!!!

make sure you are using the proper stripper. I always leave mine on for 5 minutes longer than the can says. It then comes off easily.

Yes,I agree.when I got to the stripping part of my journey,it had also gotten quite warm,so the stripper dried too quickly. I got so into working,I should had stopped and took a break, and realized the heat was also a big factor slowing me down.

I'm in the process of refinishing an oak table top for a friend. I used my mouse sander to remove the varnish - first used 220 grit then a once over with 120. After COMPLETE removal stained with Minwax Gunstock - 2 coats. Getting ready to put the finish coat on. Looks like new. Good luck.

Forgot to post time spent. The sanding took about 5-6 hours. The stain only 10 minutes.
