I was recently in someones home and she painted those exact plastic-y looking lenses or faux glass. And it looked really nice!
I would try contact paper there is a lot of variety and it is not very expensive.
Wallpaper, contact paper, rice paper, lattice, caning material (like in wicker chairs).
Take the doors off to take the yellow out completely, they are probably plastic. Hardware stores carry now, looks like metal, or tin ceiling tiles. They are heavy plastic so buy a new utility knife to form these to your cabinets.
You can paint them and then stencil them with a pretty pattern. Here is some ideas if you want to get creative and break up all paneling. I'd do the top and bottom cabinets or put a big stencil on the wall or paint the walls to bring some warmth into the room.
