Robyn, Loweโs has a kit for cabinet painting! If the water damage isnโt bad and they are paintable you could use that !
We are remodeling our kitchen and decided to keep the cabinets since they are structurally solid. They are stained, but we are going to paint them, change the hinges & hardware. I'll be rebuilding the doors to change the look. But my point is, you can repaint them after after lightly sanding them and repairing any big dings, etc. Changing the pulls will also update the look. Depending on your budget, you could buy those a couple at a time, then install them when you have all you need.
Paint is the cheapest way. New hardware if budget permits or spray paint existing hinges and knobs a new color. Depending on countertop material it can be painted or cement over if you desire to update its look. Good luck! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lONjlVD17yU

They do make veneers that you can apply with contact cement(glue), resurface the entire cabinets and doors to your taste and use poly urethane to bring out the grain, as well protecting them from water etc.
