How to tone down/change a bright brass fireplace surround?
It's bright brass and I'd like to tone it down - antique it or somehow change it, but still keep the "look" of some type of brass or bronze.

I'd paint the brick, either a nice creamy white or a dark-ish grey to update. :)
Maybe white and mantel wood color?
just my opinion, change the mantle.
The current mantle is really over-sized and chunky and I would probably replace it with a simple mantle, with no side trim. Mantle also needs to be mounted lower. Current mantle and with TV appears to be pushing the TV through the ceiling.
Click on the link below for some great mantle ideas. Is should not be to terribly expensive to change out your mantle.

Hi. I do think the mantel is kind of off. You don't need all that architecture under the shelf. I would go for a much simpler one, mounted much lower, and make it darker than the brick. I would bring the TV down, but not put it ON the shelf, so you can put some nice things there. Then the TV isn't the only thing in the space. It kind of dominates right now. If you show us more of the room, and therefore your general decor style, it would help. I hope you find a solution that pleases you.
I'd paint the mantle a semi gloss white, then white wash the brick. I think it would brighten up the entire area. Best of luck.
mantel is too small for your fireplace.
I too would whitewash it white, paint the mantel a gloss white and add two verticle elements to the sides of the firebox to make a complete fireplace surround.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJOmL_IWk0c
I would not paint the brick - it ends up looking like painted brick. The mantle is too large. I would remove it and put up something smaller and not as intrusive. If you can't do that, paint it a color that would blend with the bricks.
Whitewash the brick and change out the mantle to a simple piece of wood and stain it dark.
i Painted and added grey grout with a pallet knife to mine so it looks old. The grout make it look a bit messy and give it a three dimensional look. More like an old wearhouse. I love it.
Great area to work with being itβs a focal point of the room, I personally would paint it a slate grey being your walls are blue and have white trim and this will add that wow factor your looking for. Remove that shelf that appears to be just add from another wall and add a white mantle and lower to eye level. so your tv not so crammed towards the ceiling. ππβοΈ
