i have a friend who did that because she wanted a place to hang ChristmaS stockings. She glued the net stones on the wall and then grouted. It looked nice, but then she got tired of it because it hindered her everyday decorating. when she took it down the wall was a mess, so she had to skim coat it then prime and paint.. it could have been worse, new sheet rock would have to be put in if she wasn’t careful when taking it down

I have seen several of the Tv DIY shows put in "ornamental" fireplaces... most often they with a vintage or antique mantle surround... and a piece of quartz, slate, blue stone, or soap stone, or marble.... to set the "faux fire" (like candles" on...

Google Search: faux fireplace.... choose the "more images" selection.... you will get a lot of ideas from there.... and it may require only a few screws to attach stuff to the wall.

Yes, my husband put them around our gas log insert. Ever one comment on how great they look in the den and can't tell the difference from real stone. Go to Lowe's they can help get you started.
