Help! Need light- How can I brighten my space on a budget?

Our family room has a beamed ceiling with a low clearance header (6.5-7 ft) down the middle. This room has Windows on one wall facing East out of a semi basement room. (3rd level of a split.) There are no switches outlets and no ceiling lights. I am looking for creative lighting solutions to brighten this space on a budget.

Paint walls white. Use light colored furniture and wood. Use lots of mirrors to reflect the light from the windows. Use battery powered lights.
I'd save up and hire an electrician to put in, at minimum, lighting along the beam in the ceiling. Although you do need outlets to make the room really usable.
