I have a 140 foot driveway and need to know if I can lay gravel over the grass. Will I need to put down plastic or other kind of base first? We are a disabled couple and need to know the easiest way to do this. Thank you in advance for any help.

We graded down the area and removed the grass several inches down. Poured in the gravel several inches thick to bring up just over the grass.

Hi Liv, you will need to kill the grass, including the root system. Otherwise it will grow back up and is a problem to mow or weed wack because of the gravel.

Best to have it done right as Killi said -- and I'd include a weed barrier before I added sand then gravel,

or just abandon the gravel and leave it a grass driveway. It certainly is more eco-friendly being just grass.

    Good luck!

I would use vinegar and hot water to kill the grass, and then lay down landscape fabric, then your gravel. You do not want to deal with grass growing up through the gravel.

Please be aware.... we spent just under $1000 on pea gravel to REFRESH our driveway and at our age it was a nightmare.

We had a 200 foot pea gravel driveway that was horrible to maintain. Weeds grass and nuisance vegetation constantly popped up. Our options were to use round up vegetation killer or the weed dragon. Both worked but needed continued reapplication which seemed like 7-10 days.

We ended up putting in a concrete driveway to solve this issue and I’ve never been happier!

I had a area that was bare and would not grow grass. So I decided to gravel it. Now I’ve got grass growing every where. Explain that. Phyllis.
