Ground cover-I need a "gravel type" ground cover to park vehicles on

I need a "gravel type" ground cover to park vehicles on. The area could later be grass or a garden so gravel or road tar would not be the best. THANKS!

If you are going to turn this into a garden/grass later I would avoid any type of stone. It will be a lot of work and digging to remove them. Try large wood chips. As time goes on it will breakdown into the soil and fertilize.

Unfortunately your need for a ground cover to park on now is at odds with your future use. If you want to park on it you need something like pea gravel that drains easily, If you put a weed cloth down that will serve two purposes, keeping weeds down and keeping your layer of pea gravel from migrating downward. Later when you want to garden in that space you can either bring in a scraper to take up the gravel & cloth, or you can build raised beds. Good luck!

I extended my gravel drive to have a circle in front of the garage for backing up and turning around. I also redid the existing drive cause they had it in the sharp black rock, was painful to walk on. So I went to gravel yard, and picked a nice multi-colored pea gravel. I laid landscape fabric under the new area, and put some sand on top of it since its free here. Then I hired a couple guys to pick up the gravel a yard at a time, and rake it out. It took 7 yards @$17 each. Nice to walk on.... had to put a bit of extra work on the hill after 1st year, had to shovel the stuff at the bottom and reapply a bit on the hill, now its great and nice to walk on.

Karen, Dumping gravel onto grass for cars to park on probably isn't the best idea if you think it may be converted later into a garden or, once again, a grassy area. (see the link below)

I don't know how long you will need the extra parking space, however you may want to consider a different line of thought. Instead of paying for gravel or gravel "type" material for temporary parking (and killing the grass under it, just to turn around and then trying to fix the damage caused), you may want to consider something like the two products at the links below which will give the grass some protection while letting the cars be parked on top of it:

I know this isn't the answer you were looking for but it IS a viable alternative AND really couldn't cost more than getting the gravel 'type' stuff and afterward repairing the damage before doing something else with it ;) Thanks for using Hometalk, and have a great summer :)

Not sure how large your area is but you may consider using rubber mulch, or rubber mats, the ones they use in playgrounds. You can just pick them up when you're done and plant grass seed or start a garden.

I would recommend using pea gravel. You may need to build edging to pour it in between to contain it so your vehicles don't displace it. It will need to be added to periodically as the weight of the vehicles will set it into the soil after a period of time.
