How do I downsize a garden?
-
Ruth Patterson on Aug 21, 2016If and when I come into that situation the first thing I would do is ask friends and relatives if they want any of my plants. If they don't then express your sincerity in finding someone to take these plants and have them pass the word. There are always people that would love free plants... contact your local garden club, Dig them up and put them on the curb with a free sign. I often think of the time when I will get to this point. Good luck!Helpful Reply

Ellen on Aug 21, 2016Maybe, instead of putting in grass, which is work and requires watering etc., just put in flagstone like a nice courtyard. If it's done right, the perennials shouldn't come up through. Nothing should.Helpful Reply

Rose on Aug 21, 2016When I was in that situation I simply posted a sign that stated free (with day and hours) perennials and had lots of people come by. Hope it helps.Helpful Reply

Marie Alesi Caruana on Aug 21, 2016Mark the plants you want to give away or sell, have a "dig your own" sale or "free plants for the digging." I'm assuming you can't handle digging up your own and pot them for sale/I think this is the only alternative. I'm also not a fan of planting grass--even more maintenance than caring for perennials!Helpful Reply

Sue Sanders on Aug 21, 2016Ive had my extended perennial flower bed for years and its hard for me to keep it up. Since Ive had it for many years I dont feel too bad about digging up the bulbs, tubers, etc. I too want to let it become a grassy area and just keep it mowed. I have about 40 ft of flower beds in front of my house so feel like that is enough since I cant be out in the heat for very long. I used to work out a whole day and now feel two hrs of work a day is enough. Im down sizing everything now that I'm in charge of mowing the 2 1/2 acres yard...takes me 3 hrs to mow on my ride-a-mower. This land was useful when haveing our big cook outs or my husband put up a back stop and practiced his girls softball team on our property and didnt have to sign up for a time at the ball park. He even set up a single row of bleachers for parents to stay and watch. All our girls are gone so now so no need of chickens, horses (2), or rabbits. Just land and trees. work, work, work. Downsizing is good.Helpful Reply

Sandy on Aug 21, 2016I agree with asking friends and family if they would like them. You could also put them on Craig's list or the newspaper. However, depending on what they are, leave them alone. Coming up in your grass, they'd be mowed over, and killed or killed by any weed killer you or your maintenance person uses. Or, better yet, let them look like a wild field.Helpful Reply

Carolyn on Aug 22, 2016Wish I was near you, I'd come dig it all up and relocate to my home! Always wishing for starters, pass alongs, and shared plants - especially perennials. Just put a sign out, advertise - spread word at church or to neighbors.Helpful Reply
