You need to remove weeds and unwanted plants and make sure you've got some decent soil to grow the grass in. Rake it to even it out and remove stones and twigs and then either sod it or use grass seed. Then watering it is essential. Bags of grass seed have watering suggestions. Follow them. Sod gets watered every other or every third day until it gets established.

Water your lawn first if you have had no rain. Arieate the lawn, then spread your seed out first. If you aren't expecting rain, you should water it for about 15 to 20 minutes each day for 5 to 7 days. Do this is in the fall. Fertilize in October and December.

If you lawn has bare spots, rough up the soil with a hand rake or garden rake then put down grass seed. Select seed for the type of sun you get. Cover with a sprinkling of soil or grass clippings to keep the birds from eating the seed. For a larger area, use a leaf rake to get up all the leaves an old grass clippings then spread the seed generously so the birds can have some and you still get good coverage. Water daily if it doesn't rain. If you reseed in the fall and get a good snow cover you should have a nice full lawn in the spring. Do not fertilize until the grass is six months old.

Lawns need nitrogen and other nutrients to be healthy. Your soil may be depleted of the nutrients so you will want to fertilize every six to eight weeks or so. Check with your local nursery for suggestions on what fertilizer to use. and how to use it. Or contact your University extension service for information.

If you have lots of pine and spruce trees in your yard, you will probably not get a good lawn beneath the trees. These trees need the acid produced by the needle drop to keep the soil acidic enough for the trees to be healthy. Let the bed of needles be your ground cover directly under these trees. You can "sweeten" the soil (make it less acid) outside the treeline by applying garden lime to the top of the soil and let the rain water it in or water with a sprinkler.

Hi, for bare spots, rake to create spots for seed to sit, then add seed and cover with peat moss, this will help accelerate he seed sprout and hold in the moisture to help it grow faster. Water it daily to get it to grow!
