you have to smother or dig the grass out first.What is you location for suggested ground covers?What is the lighting? -

In my experience is hard to not have a ground cover take over! it’s all a question of time. If you are looking for instant results, you should remove or kill the grass first, then plant sufficient ground cover plants in the bare earth....probably one plant every 12” or so -
