Birding at my new home

I have several bird feeders stuck in the ground outside of my kitchen window. How can I make the whole area look attractive and avoid having to mow around it?

I purchased a heavy rubber mat used for horse stalls. Cut it into a circle. Marked and drilled small holes for the feeding posts. Added the posts and feeders, a small bath, then used the pound in edging around the perimeter of the rubber circle. It's perfect for keeping the seeds and weeds from the lawn, moles can't come up and make a mess below the feeders, and it is super easy to maintain.

If you have places you can attach a rope or cloths line too, you could hang your feeders from it.

I hang my bird feeders to trees in my backyard. I also have an old type cat feeder that I took the top off of and put seed into the bottom & keep it on the table outside.

Hang them from the eaves of your house or the roof of a deck.

Be sure to add water to your yard--there are many bird baths available or you can improvise with any thing that will hold water. Closer to the ground is better.
In addition to the seeds your using you might want to add a suet feeder or a feeder for whole unroasted peanuts. The blue jays are a treat grabing a peanut on the fly.

How about a flower garden? With the right plants, you could attract butterflies and hummingbirds as well. A bird bath in the center or a water feature that bubbles or gurgles (not to deep, birds may drown) will attract more birds.

Buy better seed. If you avoid milo and sunflower seeds in areas where you have grass, the birds will clean up for themselves.

n a use aI added railroad ties 2 high but you use a number of things to define the space Use a good landscape barrier to prevent weeds from adding more work then cut. Space for some plants like day lilies and sedum to attact butterflies add a birdbath and I also had a hummingbird feeder I could spend hours watching the birds and butterflies. Good luck with your project!
