What can I do with a red lava rock garden to made it less ugly?

We purchased a modest home that has a small front yard.........filled with red lava rocks and a fake river/pond/stream. We cannot afford to rip it out, especially since the FIRST layer is 4-5 inches deep, then plastic then another layer of rocks!!

Make some containers plantings all different sizes to disguise the rock
Wow! They did it right! Can you build a low wooden deck over the whole thing? You could put potted plants and some seating on it.

You can haphazardly spray paint to lessen the 'red rock' effect. Planting in container plants is a good idea to break up the space.
cover it with dirt, and plant grass. you may need a retaining wall to keep the dirt from moving into the road. you will never have a soggy yard.
you could give it away to anyone that will haul it away and start from scratch!!! Might as well make it what you like instead of just fixing it..
Maybe set some potted plants around it, vary the size, shape, color
