Please, get a soil test (analysis) before you go spend money to add things that may not be necessary. Contact your County Agricultural Extension Cooperative. They can assist you in getting an inexpensive test done.Helpful Reply -

I got a couple of loads of topsoil mixed with compost and tilled it into my garden area. Seems to work fine for the last 5 years. Haven't had to replace any.Helpful Reply -

just remember, any compost, mulch or peat moss will need to break down to be useful. and can actually be a hindrance if not done correctly until it does break down.limiting tilling helps as well. http://msue.anr.msu.edu/news/build_smart_soils_using_mulch_composted_organic_matter_and_reducing_tillageHelpful Reply -

What is the best way to 'make soil' for gardening?

I live on top of about a foot or two of gravel on top of more or less 'solid' limestone.I cannot afford to buy truckloads of soil to make a vegetable garden.
