What's best to plant?

I just moved into a new home that has no grass, and only small rock. I've put in planters in the back yard, and in the front yard, I have started some moss roses (Portulca?). Any suggestions on what else I could plant in various degrees of height in my rock yard?

Hosta grows well as does most sedum varieties.

Check with a local nursery for recommendations that do well in these conditions in your neck of the woods.

Great idea Carol, while you're at it, make sure to tell them what exposure and the amount of sun (and for how long)
  • To start gardening and figuring out what you are going to do, you need to draw/map out your yard and placement of home, driveway, trees etc. it does not have to be exact but you need to know what is sun and shade-and even if it is morning sun and afternoon sun. working with natives is your best option and therefore looking at and googling natives for your area is a good start http://www.ext.colostate.edu/PUBS/Garden/07242.html One important thing to do is not amend the soil so that the plants will grow where they are with minimal watering and maintenance. Using natives can be worked in with non native or alien plants to your region as well. Using pots to incorporate in areas where you cannot dig is what I do many times to add some color. I love euonymous too and this is what an area is starting to look like that will not grow anything else. This shrub can climb or bush out depending upon where it is. It will spread and grow in full sun or part shade and I even have it in shade. Versatile plants are key to creating a beautiful naturescape. Work with what you have is the key to success. Happy gardening

I have had luck w/hostas, and there are so many different varieties. Also, sedum grows just about anywhere, as do peonies! Hope you post a picture when you do get things planted!

Sounds like you have a sunny area.I have been caring for my neighbors yard and she has a lot of ice plant,in rocky hot soil.It is a beautiful purple low growing flower.Likes it dry and hot.It also seems to have spread quickly.Very impressed with this new plant.not sure why they the call it ice plant since it really likes the heat but it is very pretty.
