How do I keep squirrels from digging up the flowers in my outdoor pots? I don't want to hurt them. Thanks
No, they are looking for food. I would make a habenero pepper spray and that might work. Ask Google on how to make it.
You can sprinkle pepper flakes on the ground around your plants. That should help. If they are touching your plants, make my red pepper spray - the directions are in this post - http://www.hometalk.com/diy/outdoor/pest-repeller/save-your-garden-sprays-28593963
Save Your Garden Sprays
I cover the soil with a piece of weed fabric cut the same width of the flower pot. I use river rocks or sometimes weed fabric pins to hold the weed fabric down.
I have the same problem in my yard. Other than my husband chasing them around with a spray water bottle, I have heard that spreading shredded Irish Spring soap bars keeps them away. They don't like the smell. I am going to try it before my plants disappear.
I had the same problem here in Georgia. Did research and found out that snakes are natural enemies of squirrels and chipmunks so I went to a dollar store and bought rubber snakes and crushed red pepper. Place the snakes close the plants they're after then sprinkle crushed red pepper in the pots. They don't like the smell. Every once in a while move the snake around so the critters don't get use to seeing them in the same place. It is working for me.
Spread coffee grounds and/or hair (from a beauty salon) around your plants
Cayenne pepper can be sprinkled around the area. It can also be used in bird feeders. It does not affect the birds but squirrels don't like it.
