Once you weed the bed, sprinkle preen weed preventer. It helps alot and doesn't harm the plants.
smother them out with cardboard and newspapers
Lay tarp down. Cut holes for plants in it. Plant flowers. Add mulch to top of tarp if you want to hide it. There's also products on the market just for this. Weed barriers. They let water in, keep weeds out
Do a thorough weeding then carefully place a layer of three-four sheets of newspaper around the plants, cover with a mulch of your choice.
Put down a tarp. Also, don't skimp on the digging out every one that you see!
