Hi Val,
I am an avid gardener and the lizards and snakes are the good guys! They keep the other bugs that eat your garden from getting out of control and keep your little ecosystem in balance.
Lizards and snakes are either looking for resting spots, heat on warm sunny rocks or for food.
You can keep them at bay if they make you squeamish with a bit of water from your hose or they will scat with a slight push from a broom.
Moth balls.
I'm like Pjoblake, and enjoy seeing snakes and toads (no lizards here) in the garden; I know they are busy keeping critters away. Make sure you don't have cracks around your home and that your doors fit/close tightly. Remove debris (leaf litter. firewood, empty planters or flowers pots or rocks from close to your home where they can hide/rest.
Is your yard fenced... and what kind of fencing do you have? We get rattlesnakes here in the rural areas of Phoenix.. we have a wrought iron fence and are always worried about the snakes (and the "toxic" toads) getting into the small yard with our Lab (every things gets chased and goes in the mouth)... we put 24 inch rabbit wire on the outside of the wrought iron fence and used utility wire to attach it. The only time we have have a snake get thru in the last 5 years... is one weekend when the gate was down for repair. The lizards are not harmful and the (5) cats are always on duty in the screen room (the lizards come in to get the bugs attracted to the porch light) Consider the lizards... organic pest control.
If you live in the country or a rural area, consider getting "Guinea" hens.. they eat pests and the lizards, and small snakes, with out eating your plants, lay eggs, will roost in trees (if you don't have a chicken house) and are an excellent alarm system.... a loud alarm system
Have you tried used coffee grounds? Lots of them!
Home Depot sells something called snake away. It really works!
