Don't put the petroleum jelly anywhere the hummingbirds might get their beaks, feet, etc. on it. It is very dangerous to them. I plant lots of bright and colorful wildflowers away from the house and yard so the bees feed from them and leave me and my hummingbird feeders alone.

I use WD40 to keep the wasps away. Just spray the top of the feeder with WD40 before filling. Do not get it near the feeding ports. Hummers do not land on the top of the feeder so they are safe.
