Put a wire net around the top off the pot just below the plant
I took some metal mesh and cut it to size of pots and secured with zip strips. The squirrel's are awful at my new house! They were destroying everything! I used a masonry bit for my ceramic pots and just a regular bit for the plastic pots. Put the mesh on top and zip stripped them down through holes in pot and squares in mesh. Depending on size of the pot I made as many holes around them to uniformly hold mesh down. Another thing that I found they hate is Hungarian Hot Paprika! You may have to sprinkle it on several times over the season after it rains and the spice wears off a bit. Be as generous as you feel you need to be, it's never harmed any of my plants and some squirrels are more persistent than others, lol!
