You could try dragging a loose weave fabric like burlap with something weighted across it and see if that will pick them up.
I rake mine up with just a leaf rake. They come up easily, but make sure you are not in bare feet or sandals---- those spiky balls hurt!
When I had problems with the spiked balls {space balls} I used them as fire starters in my outdoor fire pit. I placed a few in a yard waste recycle bag for use in the spring and sprinkle them with citronella oil and they do double duty.
