Weed killer can help manage and reset your situation. If using a commercial product refer to product labeling and instructions as to direct —when you can replant or reseed the area if thats desired. -

Do not use weed killer. Use vinegar, it's environmentally safer and better. Yup you can recover but if I were you just add another layer of rocks and keep using vinegar to control weeds that will creep in. -
