I have -- well HAD -- the same problem until my sister told me what SHE does to get rid of them and then to keep them out. She buy a liquid ant bait called TERRO and puts the traps around in different places where they normally travel (she puts the small clear bait traps in the back corner on top of her countertops, and even TAPED a few along the top of the face of her old fashioned kitchen sink with the entrance at the top) and the first day there was only a little activity, but the next day there was a traffic jam of ants trying to get in to eat the poisoned sweet liquid. DO NOT KILL THE ANTS YOURSELF. They need to eat it and carry it back to the colony eventually killing off all the colony including the queen. This stuff is amazing! By the third or 4th day you will be any free YAYYYY ..... see the video below:

I had ants in the kitchen every spring and into the summer for years. Tried every bait and home remedy that people claimed worked for them with no success. Kept the kitchen spotless, moved my dog's food to another room, and finally called an exterminator. He baited inside and sprayed the foundation outside. It was a frustrating last resort. He came back a second time about--ummm--I can't remember. Maybe 6 weeks later and did the same application. I haven't had an ant in 6 years.

I don't use anything on my counters or floors that has any citric or fragrances. I use unscented cleansers on my floors and now for many years I have been ant free.

We use Terro, found in the garden section of Lowes and Home Depot. After they are gone, wipe your counter surfaces to destroy and trails they have left behind.
