How would you paint a wooden coffee table to use outside on the patio?

Which type of paint and sealant would work to be able to use it outside in the elements. At this time the table is painted white - should it be sanded down to wood then sealed?

I would use Rustoleum Marine paint, comes in a quart which is perfect to give a table a couple coats. I would sand smooth but you don't have to do to bare wood.

Wendy, if you want a durable finish, then you need to prep very thoroughly. Sand any uneven spots, repair damage with a wood putty, then prime with good quality primer such as Kilz rated for exterior use. Then, paint with any exterior grade enamel paint.
Just sand to remove any shine. Prime with Kilz primer. Paint your color. Latex paint is fine. Seal with three coats of a water based polyurethane.
Give your table a good sanding first. They sell paint made specifically for outdoors and you can find it at hardware stores or Michaels carries a line of outdoor furniture paint. You'll definitely want to seal with polyurethane.
