Maybe paint the wooden steps in a bright color. I've done away with all hedges around my house.
I would use cement pavers, instead of the slate in the included photo and gravel to construct a patio. I would use a sand base first to level the area. It could be done in stages to keep the cost down. I included a pic so you can visualize the finished project.
Cut down the hedge and add long planters or benches. Put planter boxes on either side of the stairs wit something tall but not wide. Update the plants close to the house with something tall and flowery to draw attention. Update the umbrella with something that has a different color so it pops. Finally, I would put down some pretty tiles between the door and table.

Ok, first, I totally want your patio!! My home is patio-less at this time so I am engaged in patio envy!! Haha!
An idea that comes to mind is to create some bench seating along the side of your house. It would add a clean, modern line and provide lots of seating. Here is an example:

Your little staircase is a dream! I can see it painted in some neutral colors to match the cushions on your bench seat! Then add some matching planters... OK, I need to stop living vicariously through your patio. Haha!! :)
Have fun!
