Install all low maintence options that you can afford. We replaced a massive deck and replaced with vinyl rails, looking back we wish we did composite decking too. The direct sun- uv abuse causes yearly maintenance and sealing.
Agree with Vimarhonor, we had a huge deck built in 09, with vinyl white railing. The wood deck part has been a pain ever since. Go with a composite deck if you can afford it. My friend, a licensed contractor put our deck down, did a beautiful job, but I used Lowes opaque deck paint, what a disaster. He told me not to put composite deck down in the hot summer or the freezing winter, so we are going to plan on in for September or October or wait until next spring.
Cool Decking.
From a safety perspective, encorporate some form of built-in step or railing lighting into the design. If at all possible, add a couple of electrical outlets with USB plugs. This reduces the need for exta long extension chords, and helps to ensure that your phone is always charged, ready for those 'picture perfect moments.'
