What is the best thing to have under bird feeders for the seed?

Under our tree hanging and our stand feeders there is so much seed dropped and the grass is gone from the birds pecking for seed. Is there a ground cover or stone or something that would make this area look nicer?

I had the same problem under a tree and since it is shaded quite a bit wanted something that would take shade. I put wandering jew in pots (about 3 of them) and stood them next to the tree (couldn't plant as there were too many tree roots) and they have taken off and have covered the area under and around the tree.

Go to Wild Birds Unlimited and get the mess free birdseed....it really doesnt cost much more and the birds love it. They wont be digging through the seed to get what they want...Also get the squirrel proof feeder that shuts when a squirrel gets on the feeder. Its about $100 but worth it in wasted seed and guaranteed fro life....just take back the broken or old oneand they replace it! We have saved a lot of $$ by investing in the good stuff!

A cat. You would be suprised at how much this reduces the cost of bird seed.
