Need to paint or surface concrete mantel above active fireplace

I think there are "concrete" mixes or paints which can be applied, buffed, et al. Looking for something decorative, but subtle, to add color and resurface. Must be fire-resistant as hearth is active.

What about "skinning" it with some tile. painted concrete is still just painted concrete. Hi Susan - there are several products that can be applied to concrete/stone or other materials used in mantels. If the area has any smoke residue, it most likely will need to be primed first. If the concrete is untreated you can Goggle 'Miracle Grow for staining concrete' and see if this would work, and if you would like the look. Best of luck to you. Yours in art, Pamela

Unless the concrete has not had any sealer or other coating put over it, you will not be happy with the results of staining. An over lay could look good but it would need to be done by someone who is very good with overlays and even then its not going to have a polished look. Its not possible to properly polish a mantle thats mounted on the wall. You may be able to paint it but that would be my last option, id probably just replace it with what i wanted before going that route.
