Would chalk paint look good and wear well or should I use a spray paint?

Either would work. I have done both and think the spray paint is easier and lasts longer (as long as you use the spray paint for metal). You have to have a steady hand, light layers or spray paint, letting it dry in between each coat and sanding if needed. The photo is my inspiration for my next file cabinet find:

You would have to put an undercoat on first and then the chalk paint , then it should work.

I used straight chalk paint on mine. I did wax it afterwards so that it would stand up better to bumps and dings.

My daughter used chalk paint, that she applied with a roller on her refrigerator. She did not apply any primer, just painted it on. She has 2 small kids and 3 dogs and a side, as well as the front are exposed. she did this over a year ago and it has held up very well. The kids draw on it while she is busy in the kitchen and then she washes it off so they can draw again. She and her husband write their grocery lists and reminders/notes on the upper portion. I would think that your filing cabinet should do as well.

Hi Lee, Sounds like you are describing chalkboard paint that your daughter used. It's a bit different from chalk paint.

I used chalk paint that I made with plaster of paris on my metal file cabinets, waxed after. They look great and are holding up great. So happy I did it.
