How do I paint 40 year old cabinets?

How do I paint 40 year old cabinets that are not truly wood probably some kind of fiberboard and a horrible shade of yellow. A few months ago there was a DYI for painting cabinets a shade of blue and then a stain that was wiped off. They were beautiful.

You are going to have to sand, and then fill in any dented dings etc. Then you will have to prime with a good stain blocking primer, such as BIN or Kilz. Read the cans they make many types. After priming you are going to have to sand again lightly. Get a good acrylic paint, BM, SW and Behr make a good acrylic. I would use a spray painter, Homemax is a cheap one to buy. A sprayer will not leave brush marks. Take off all your doors and set up a spray station. Put plastic around your boxes and block for overspray. or you can use a good mohair roller. You are going to have to put probably 3 coats of paint on. Or do two coats of primer and 2 coats of paint. lightly sand between each coat and clean well. Good luck, this is not an easy job, takes many hours or even weeks. Here is a great tutorial Painting Kitchen Cabinets - Tips To Ensure Success | In My Own Style

I am doing a reno on a very old trailer. The cupboard doors had fairly deep 'grain' marks and the corners had gaps. I used Beyond Paint and it filled in all the groove as well as the gapped corners. The walls had obvious seams that filled in nicely as well. The best part about using this paint is there is NO prep work except to clean the surface. This paint might save you a lot of headache and time. Check out the results I got and see if this is something you might want to try. http://traileratthelake.com/category/the-paint/

I got great results on all kinds of surfaces.
