How do I refinish a small wood table with white wash or chalk paint??
I have a dark stained wood sewing table, about 2 foot tall; 10" x 12" top; has 1 drawer and another slide out for spools of thread and yarn with a front matching the top drawer. We want to pretty it up to put in the front patio. Not too pretty - just something to put parcels and stuff on when we approach the front door. I have done other extensive refinish projects (50's breakfast nook; small vintage bookcase; etc.) and have had very impressive results. I have no experience with white wash or chalk paint or gel stain - do I have to do standard prepping - ie: stripping, sanding, etc., or can I just work over the existing old finish to get a rustic or weathered look?

Painting furniture is easy. Clean it well. Is it shiny? It needs a light sanding or a good primer. Chalk paint sticks well to furniture. Just paint it on. You can seal with wax or another top coat. I like polycrylic because it's water-based and won't yellow over light colors.
I painted my kitchen cabinets with white milk paint, and they look great more than a year later. I think the same process would work for a table. You can see my steps here:
