How do you paint over a laminated bedroom dresser (not all 100% wood)?

I have french provincial inspired furniture (similar in style to the photo attached, only the attached photo has already been made over) from the 1990's that I would like to transform, from a cherry wood to a coastal or nautical feel. Some parts of the furniture are wood, and some appear to be pressboard/laminate. What is the best way to transform this? Kathleen

Clean the pieces with TSP and rinse. Once it is dry, sand lightly to remove some of the gloss. Wipe down with a tack otherwise. I would put a coat if prime on next to make sure the cherry color does not bleed through. You can use chalk paint or furniture paint in your chosen color. If you plan to have the top dark like the picture. Use a gel stain. No need to prime the top, just a light sand.
Clean well, sand lightly and apply the paint of your choice. Changing the hardware will make a huge difference. Maybe you rope. I can envision the furniture painted navy blue with white cotton rope pulls or possibly brass handles.
Prep is always key in these projects. It will serve you well in the finished project.

It is super easy to paint with Dixie Belle.
Step one: Clean with White Lightning
Step two: Apply two coats of Slick Stick
Step three: Paint one to two coats of Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint
Step four (optional): Use any of our clear coats or waxes for extra protection or a different style finish
No sanding required!

Clean and lightly sand to scuff up finish as described in above answers and then paint with stixx primer. This primer will make any project look professional. After priming, you can paint with whatever pain you like the primer makes a hard sealed base coat.
You can paint right over it! If you can you need to sand the laminate tops enough to get them scratched up so paint will stick. Here's a tutorial that may help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xNkUVPICzA&t=1s
You will still need a light sanding
