How has painting a sofa worked for you?

I have an old sofa that is still very sound and very comfortable to sit on, but ... I hate the colour. I've been reading about spray painting fabric but am skeptical. Has anyone done this with good results, i.e. does the paint colour evenly? Does the paint transfer to clothing? Is the fabric stiff after drying? What are YOUR tips and/or mistakes?

I haven't done it, but I've read several articles about how to do it. There are a couple of key things you can do to prevent stiffness. One is to use regular paint mixed with fabric medium. Another is to always sand (and remove the dust) between coats. One more is to spray the sofa with water to keep it damp as you go. Here's an article where some of those tips are used. It is super easy to paint fabric with Dixie Belle:
Step one: Mist the fabric to allow it to accept the paint
Step two: Paint one coat of Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint
Step three: Allow to dry and sand with a sanding sponge
Step four: Paint a second coat if you'd like, followed by sanding
Step five: Apply Easy Peasy Spray Wax if you'd like a little more protection if it will be used a lot
